background：The calpains, calcium-activated neutral proteases, are nonlysosomal, intracellular cysteine proteases. This gene encodes the large subunit of the ubiquitous enzyme, calpain 2. Multiple heterogeneous transcriptional start sites in the 5' UTR have been reported.
