Dynamin related protein 1 (Drp1), also known as Dynamin-like protein 1, mediates outter mitochondrial membrane fission in mammilian cells. Like other members of the Dynamin superfamily of GTPases, Drp1 contains a N-terminal tripartate GTP-binding domain and exists as a T-shaped dimer with a head, leg, and stalk. The addition of GTP induces head and stalk rearrangement resulting in membrane constriction. Drp1 has been shown to affect mitochondrial morphology and places a significant role in mitochondrial and peroxisomal fission in mammilian cells. During apoptosis, Drp1 translocates from the cytosol to mitochondria and localizes to potential organelle division sites.
