Alpha-(1,3)-fucosyltransferase 3 (FucT-III; Galactoside 3(4)-L-fucosyltransferase) is highly expressed in the small intestine, colon, stomach, and kidney. It is a member of the glycosyltransferase family of proteins which are involved in a glycosylation pathway that attaches fucose to Lewis epitopes of target molecules. This type of post-translational modification allows modified (fucosylated) molecules to recognize specific target substrates. Fucosyltransferases may therefore play an important role in communication at the cell surface.
