GST (glutathione-S-transferase) represents a major group of detoxification enzymes, which are known to exist as multiple cytosolic and membrane-bound isoenzymes, with distinct catalytic and noncatalytic binding properties. Whereas the cytosolic enzymes are encoded by at least five distantly related gene families, the membrane-bound enzymes are encoded by single genes.
